File No. 079

Little Cottage

Carries Her House With Her

"A roof is only a suggestion. But I like the suggestion."

Found: Hanging from a nail that predates the house · Filed 2022

Quirks

• Refuses to be set on any surface that isn't hanging
• Creaks in a rhythm no one has been able to transcribe
• Warmer to the touch on Sundays. We have stopped asking why.

Parts

• Bent copper hanger, halo and spine
• Rusted galvanized L-brackets, shoulders and roof
• Twin brass pipe fittings, eyes
• Weathered pine offcut, torso
• Iron staples, feet

Origin

Little Cottage came in through the ceiling, which is to say she was already on the hook when we noticed the hook. Nobody in the workshop had put her there. Nobody had put the nail there either.

She rocks, gently, when a door closes anywhere in the building. We have decided this is affection.
